With warmer spring weather finally in reach, what better time to get out there and do some necessary maintenance on your property that could potentially save you some money on a larger job later on!

Here are a few of Discount Insurance’s top tips for upholding your property this spring.

1. Clear out the garden

Most people abandon the upkeep of their garden during the winter months, and who would blame them?

There’s a snowball’s chance in hell that you’d rather be outside in the cold up keeping the maintenance of your garden over cuddling up indoors in the warmth with a hot chocolate.

An overgrown garden isn’t a pretty sight, but this is how most gardens end up after winter.

Weeds are rife at this time of the year. Make sure to remove any weeds in patios and driveways as these can cause cracks that in turn can lead to drainage problems.  Use a concrete filler to help seal it off.

It’s a good idea to check on any trees or branches that are at risk of falling to prevent damage to properties and electrical lines.

Be sure to feed your soil with a good quality fertilizer, remove any leaves and debris and add a fresh lick of paint to the shed or fences if you feel like they have weathered during the winter.

2. Review the gutters

The role of the guttering is to stop damage to your property from overflowing rainwater. In order to do its job properly, the gutters need to be cleaned ideally twice a year.

Remove any leaves or debris blocking the gutters. You can either do this yourself if you feel comfortable to save money or hire a professional to do it for you.

Be sure to replace any lose or leaky gutters to help prevent costly damage to your property.

3. Inspect the roof

This task is very important as it can prevent any problems from escalating further and saves you a  huge repairs bill!

A common problem for roofs is tiles being blown away or out of place in the wind. This will need attention swiftly as it may cause water penetration to the felt underneath the tiles.  Be sure to replace any tiles.

If you have a flat roof you will need to examine for damp patching or sagging.

Also, check for any unwanted visitors like rodents and birds. Call pest control in order to prevent any further damage to your property.
