Do you want to escape the winter blues and make the most of
the winter sun instead? Here are 6 of our favourite destinations where you can
forget the shorter days and hide from the cold!
·
South
Island, New Zealand
New Zealand offers relatively dry and warm weather
throughout its summer months which are December to February.
There is a wide range of activities that you can partake in,
from tasting wines in the Marlborough region to spending time relaxing at the
beaches around Nelson. You could swim among dolphins in Kaikoura or for real
adrenaline junkies, you could sky dive and/or bungee jump in Queenstown!
·
Island
hop in the Philippines
From November to April, typhoon season is out and splendid
summer is in! Set in paradisal turquoise waters, the islands around El Nido and
Coron in Palawan offer breath-taking coastlines.
You can venture into remote areas on multi day adventures
where you can indulge in meals consisting of freshly caught seafood, spend your
days snorkelling or sunbathing. The more accessible islands can be visited on
day Bangka boat trips.
·
Pinar Del
Rio, Cuba
With the
risk of hurricanes dramatically falling at the end of November, Cuba is left
with hot and clear sunny days. In Cuba’s westernmost province of Pinar Del Rio,
the village of Viñales is nestled
in a beautiful and serene valley and is located a few hours away from Havana.
The pace of
life is slow at the village and retains a strongly traditional feel. Day trips
to the nearby beaches of Cayo Jutias or Cayo Levisa are a must to enjoy white
sand beaches that stretch for several kilometres.
·
Kerala,
India
Despite
receiving the most rainfall per year, the southern Indian state of Kerala only
has a few rainy days a month from December to February and winter temperatures
average in the late twenties.
Explore the
tree covered mountains or enjoy the 550km coastline which is composed of rice
paddies, lagoons, canal backwaters and palm lined beaches. You can witness
rural Keralan life in magnificent surroundings on an overnight cruise in a
traditional wooden barge, all while enjoying the finest curries in the world.
·
Fuerteventura,
Canary Islands, Spain
Ideal for
short breaks from Europe, Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary
Islands and has the longest beaches in the archipelago. Located less than 100km
from Africa, the winter temperatures are approximately 18°C.
The island
is relatively undeveloped with the main tourists resorts of Corralejo in the
north and Morri Jable in the south being low-key when compared to their
equivalents on Tenerife. A trip here wouldn’t be complete without sampling the
local goat’s cheese, Majorero, which has a uniquely nutty flavour and smooth
texture.
·
Cape
Town, South Africa
The ultimate mix of buzzing urban life and
picturesque scenery, the city has an incredible location with the Atlantic
Ocean sitting on its west and the Indian Ocean to the east.
There is the option to whale watch and absorb
striking views from the coastal roads, explore the Kirstenbosch Botanical
Gardens or sample wines at the Constantia estates which are easily accessible
from the city centre.
