You can't put a price on quality family time, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't watch the pennies whilst planning your trip. Here at Discount Insurance we choose three of our favourite summer holiday destination on a budget that won't break the bank.

St Malo, Brittany, France

With beautiful towns such as St Malo, Dinard and Dinnan along a spectacular coastline, Brittany is a great location for some quality family time in the sun. Probably the cheapest way to stay is to hire a large six-berth tent, which comes equipped with electric lights, a fridge, and proper beds for a good night’s sleep.

For families, it might be cheaper to travel to France by car and sea rather than fork out for flights, although obviously the journey will take longer – not always a great idea with impatient kids! Should you choose to go by sea, Brittany Ferries provide a service several times a day from Portsmouth and Plymouth to St Malo and Roscoff in Brittany.  Temperatures in Brittany are similar to those in the UK, so you aren’t guaranteed heat, but if travelling during the school holidays you should get decent weather.

Estepona, Andalusia, Southern Spain

Southern Spain has around 300 days of sunshine a year, and with temperatures as high as the upper 20s even off-season, you are almost guaranteed good weather here.  Getting there is painless enough too, there are numerous flights a day from various UK airports out to Malaga, where you can hire a car or get a coach along the coast to Estepona.

There is hotel accommodation to suit all budgets, including a wide choice of both all-inclusive and self-catering options. With a family to feed, all-inclusive often works out cheaper in the long run. If you can drag yourself off the beach, then there are many places to visit such as Granada, Alhambra Palace in Granada or cities of Seville, Jerez or Cadiz. As well as many ‘white villages’ to be found in the hills above Estepona, you can also watch the famous Spanish white horses perform.

Madeira, Portugal

The island of Madeira combines gorgeous beaches, volcanic caves, and traditional villages. The island’s natural beauty make it a favourite for families and couples and it boasts a multitude of gardens, parks showcasing breath taking wildlife and flowers.

Beach lovers should head towards Praia da Jamaica. Those seeking culture should head to the capital of Funchal with its picturesque squares, charming old streets and historical monuments.

The island also offers the opportunity for a whole host of other activities such as dolphin watching, hiking,
surfing, scuba diving and hiking. Book early, or last minute, to save money on flights.

Whether you decide to go on your holidays have a fantastic time, and make sure you stay safe and protect yourself with comprehensive travel insurance
