It’s easier than you might think to make a cultural faux pas when you’re travelling. Swimwear, chewing gum, high heels, skinny dipping –the world has weird laws about pretty much everything. Whether you are heading to Euro 2016 or a family holiday, these are the things you should take into consideration.

Only speedos allowed in France
Gentlemen, in most of France’s public swimming pools, loose-fitting trunks are forbidden – so Speedos are the order of the day. If your togs don’t comply, you won’t be allowed in for a dip.

Don’t step on currency in Thailand
The Thai baht carries an image of the revered King of Thailand, who ruled the country for 70 years. Stepping on the currency, and therefore his face, is a criminal act to insult his majesty.

Don’t run out of fuel in Germany
It is illegal to run out of fuel on the autobahn in Germany. It’s also illegal to walk along the autobahn, which wouldn’t make a good place for strolling.

No driving with sandals/flip flops in Spain
Not advised in any case, but this is a criminal offence in Spain.

No bad words on Virginia Beach, US
In an effort to clear up the image of this family-friendly beach, swearing was made an offence in the 90’s. If you’re caught foul-mouthing you could be fined.

No spitting in Barcelona
It’s quite rightly frowned upon in many places around the world, but you can face a fine for spitting in this Spanish city.

No high heels in Greece
Historic sites, such as the Acropolis, have banned the wearing of high heels for fear of causing damage to ancient monuments.

Don’t chew gum in Singapore
Some people regard chewing gum as ill-mannered, but in Singapore it’s a criminal offence to chew gum unless it’s medicinal.

No shave no kiss in Eureka, Nevada
It’s illegal for men with moustaches to kiss women in Eureka, Nevada.

No overeating in Japan
In Japan it is technically forbidden to be obese: lawmakers set a maximum waistline of 80cm for men 40 and over. If their paunches breach this limit, men will be given dieting guidance. Tips from the country that gave ups sumo.

While on holiday remember some of these unusual laws and try and to respect the cultures around the world.
