It’s that time of year when many of us have to grapple with jet lag.  Struggling to stay awake during the day or lying wide awake in bed in the wee small hours can make it difficult to truly enjoy the first few days of your trip.



Jet lag occurs when the brain thinks that it is in one time zone but, because you have flown a long distance, you are actually in another.  It is more common when you travel anywhere with a time difference of more than five hours and symptoms include disturbed sleep, headaches, lethargy and an inability to concentrate.

Those flying east to destinations such as Bali and Thailand are likely to suffer the most as this involves going to bed earlier than your body expects which is harder and more unusual than staying up late.

Here are some top tips to help you beat jet lag this summer:

  1. Prepare – begin to adjust your body clock by sleeping and waking later or earlier for a few days before your trip.
  2. Daylight – If you have travelled west then get some daylight early in the morning to help your body to adjust.  If you have travelled east then do the opposite and stay indoors as much as possible in the morning and schedule outdoor activities in the afternoon
  3. Sleep – Whatever happens you should try to get a minimum of four hours sleep on the night of your arrival.
  4. Food – If you need to go to sleep soon after arriving at your destination then choose a meal which is rich in carbohydrates, conversely if you need to stay awake then stick to protein-based dishes.
  5. Supplements – Researchers have discovered that Pycnogenol which is derived from pine bark can cut the symptoms of jet lag by up to 50% by preventing the brain and body from swelling.
  6. Dehydration – Is thought to exaggerate the effects of jet lag so experts recommend that you avoid caffeine and alcohol whilst flying.
  7. Stopovers – If it is practical then breaking your journey with a short stopover allows your body to adjust more gradually to the new time zone.
